New Research on Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM) Use in Sjögren’s
A recent study co-designed by RCSI researchers and Sjögren’s Ireland explored how people living with Sjögren’s use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) alongside conventional care. Findings from an online survey (296 respondents, mostly women with a formal diagnosis) reveal:
•83.8% used some form of CAM in the past year
•1 in 4 attended a CAM practitioner (most commonly chiropractors & acupuncturists)
•66.2% used self-administered CAM (vitamins, supplements, etc.)
•69.9% engaged in self-care practices like meditation & relaxation
With CAM playing a significant role in symptom management and well-being, healthcare professionals should discuss its use and provide evidence-based guidance.
